Dinner at Eighty

Dinner at Eighty“When you have read this, I hope you will feel that, if an eighty year old can entertain without fuss and produce delicious food, you can too. And there is no need to wait until you are eighty; it is just as good at much younger ages. Elaborate entertaining is not essential; the important thing is to spend time with your guests and enjoy their company. I know some people who try elaborate recipes. When they succeed it is a triumph, but when it goes wrong it is a disaster. None of the recipes that follow can go seriously wrong.”

“He has compiled a collection of his favourite recipes, which he wants to share with you. Like all good chefs he has chosen them from various sources, tried them out, and added his own improvements and variations. Just reading them has made my mouth water.” Sandy Wilson

Guy de Moubray, a former senior official of the Bank of England, is now 81 years old and has lived a third of his life in Suffolk, which he has come to love. When his wife died seven years ago after a very long illness, he decided he was not going to mope, but was going to seek new friends and indulge his passion for cooking, making a practice of giving small lunch and dinner parties for family and friends. He also decided that he should share the beauty of his house with others and has had groups of visitors to entertain.
Many of his guests are fairly elderly and seem to enjoy their visits and have begun to ask him for the recipes of the meals they have enjoyed.
Entertaining does not, he thinks, need to be difficult. He is very keen to use fresh local produce. All his recipes are quite simple and his ‘rules of engagement’ ensure that he does not spend a lot of the time in the kitchen when the guests are present. The important thing is to enjoy the company of one's guests and prepare as much of the meal in advance as possible.
